Safety (ES&H)

Bechtel continues to raise the bar for Environmental,
Safety & Health (ES&H) in the telecommunications industry.

Bechtel continues to raise the standard for safety in the telecommunications industry. Our competent tower climbing, safe driving, and subcontractor safety compliance programs are making the industry safer for our customers, our employees, and our subcontractors.

Safety is a core value and fundamental to Bechtel's culture. In 2005, Bechtel maintained an industry-leading record, achieving zero Lost Workday incidents on almost 88 percent of our projects worldwide. Our outstanding safety record represents a significant reduction in accidents and environmental incidents, which are potentially costly and harmful to our clients.

Bechtel's dedication to safety pays off for our clients. We have reduced project-operating costs while increasing project productivity. Our ES&H management system is based on a Zero Accidents philosophy. As a result, we have set the industry standard in several areas, including regulatory compliance, training, safe tower climbing, and safe driving.

Our Approach

Bechtel's approach to managing safety begins with our belief that all accidents are preventable and is reinforced by our commitment to provide a safe working environment for our employees, the public, and the communities we serve. Our company's safety policy is built on three core components - management commitment and leadership, employee commitment and participation, and prevention-based programs and processes. Each is essential to achieving and sustaining Zero Accident performance by addressing the behavior of our supervisors and employees.

Our People, Processes and Programs

Our people are highly trained industry experts, knowledgeable in safety. Our risk-based approach from our ES&H Management System mandates that we identify and implement prevention processes from project inception to turnover to our customer. Our process improvement program, Six Sigma, has helped us establish industry-leading competent tower climbing standards, a safe driving program, and a standard subcontractor safety and health program.

Our Performance

Our ES&H Management System uses leading indicators developed by Six Sigma methodologies to break away from lagging safety performance measures. We identify the most likely safety management failures and measure compliance and prevention efforts before accidents occur. Our commitment to continuous improvement has increased the opportunity for project success.
