Safety Excellence

Bechtel manages or co-manages seven government services sites across the United States that have been recognized for excellence in safety with the government's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Status—the highest honor for worksite-based safety and health systems.

Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass

Location: Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in Richmond, Kentucky

A joint venture of Bechtel National Inc. and Parsons Government Services Inc. together with its teaming subcontractors, the project received recertification from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration as a VPP Star site recognizing the facility's continued commitment to safe construction practices. The team was first awarded this status in 2011, becoming the first construction site in Kentucky to achieve this honor.

Los Alamos National Security, LLC

Location: Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico

This is the first U.S. Department of Energy VPP Star for Los Alamos National Security, LLC, the management and operations contractor for the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratory. With nearly 10,000 employees and contractors working across a 36-square-mile area, Los Alamos is the largest site in the DOE complex to reach Star status.

The VPP Star flag flying at the entrance of the laboratory is a proud daily reminder that safety is a core value of our workforce.  — Paul Henry, Acting Los Alamos National Laboratory Deputy Director

Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant

Location: U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site, Washington state

The Department of Energy’s Voluntary Protection Program awarded a 2015 Star of Excellence to Bechtel National, Inc. for its safety performance and mentoring efforts at the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, also known as the Vit Plant. The Star of Excellence is the highest rank of the DOE-VPP annual achievement awards.

Savannah River Remediation

Bechtel is part of Savannah River Remediation LLC, which operates Savannah River Site liquid waste complex and remediates radioactive and hazardous underground waste tanks. In addition to operations, Savannah River Remediation handles design, construction, and maintenance. In 2015, SRR won the Star of Excellence Award at the 31st Annual National Voluntary Protection Program Participants Association conference.

U.S. Nuclear Security Enterprise

Locations: Texas and Tennessee, USA

Consolidated Nuclear Security, a Bechtel-led partnership with Lockheed Martin Services, Inc., and ATK Launch Systems Inc., began managing and operating the Pantex Plant and the Y-12 National Security Complex for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration in July 2014.

Pantex Plant

Location: Amarillo, Texas

For decades, Pantex has provided technology for the manufacturing, evaluation, and testing of nuclear explosives, joint test beds, and other special nuclear materials. This experience uniquely qualifies Pantex scientists and engineers to provide technology solutions for a variety of problems. Pantex has organizations dedicated to computerized special tooling, test equipment (including critical nuclear explosive testers), packaging, and system engineering.

Y-12 National Security Complex

Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Y‑12 was the first site in the world to electromagnetically separate uranium on an industrial scale, but that was only the beginning. Since then, the complex has amassed a wealth of uranium know-how:

  • Machining, recycling, and reprocessing
  • Securing and storing
  • Handling and transporting
  • Analyzing and detecting
  • Training others to safeguard uranium

Bechtel Pueblo Team

Location: Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in Pueblo, Colorado

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) is a state-of-the-art facility built to safely and efficiently destroy the chemical weapons stockpile currently in storage at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot near Pueblo, Colorado. The Bechtel Pueblo Team includes Bechtel, URS, Battelle Memorial Institute, and Parsons Infrastructure and Technology.
