When I first joined Bechtel in London, I was surprised and challenged by the amount of responsibility and client contact I was given. In the middle of 2008, I got the opportunity to move out to our Oil, Gas & Chemicals headquarters in Houston. We were engineering a new coker unit at an existing oil refinery. After a six month stint in the office, I moved out to the job site to experience the world of construction itself. Here I gained experience in project management, scheduling, and contracts.
Bechtel’s graduate scheme in the UK focuses on management from the start. The structured off-site training programs provide a great opportunity to meet and build relationships with fellow graduates. You are also encouraged to drive your own career and to gain experience in all the technical components and work processes involved in your job. This “learn everything” approach builds the knowledge required to take a managerial role at an early stage.
