Since its beginnings as a railroad-grading operation in the Oklahoma Territory at the end of the 19th century, Bechtel has grown to become a world leader in engineering and construction. Stephen Bechtel Sr., who helmed the company from 1933 to 1960, once remarked, “We can build anything, anytime, anywhere.” He built Bechtel into a global concern, landing projects on every continent and expanding the portfolio of work to include areas such as pipelines, petroleum and chemicals, mining and metals, and power.
Today, Bechtel works in dozens of nations, designing and building major projects including aluminum smelters, liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plants, rail systems, roads, and bridges. Working in many different countries requires global reach with a local touch, as well as the ability to work under sometimes extreme conditions, from scorching deserts to icy fjords, and from unpopulated rain forests to busy cities.
But pictures tell the story better than words. We offer a sampling of photos of current and recently completed projects that have helped define Bechtel as a company with global reach.
