The Bechtel Women’s Group, Hanford chapter, knows all about moving into a new community. Its members have made hundreds of household moves and lived in dozens of different countries—experience that comes in handy as they welcome Bechtel staff and families to the company’s environmental restoration and waste treatment plant projects at the Hanford Site in southeast Washington state.
They also know the value of giving back to the community. Over the past eight years, The Bechtel Women’s Group has raised more than $300,000 for charity through its annual Service Auction. Local businesses and employees donate goods and services, which are auctioned to Bechtel employees, guests, subcontractors, and customers.
Proceeds from the auction go to organizations that provide meals to seniors and shut-ins, therapy for developmentally delayed or disabled children, recreational opportunities to
at-risk youth, and many other services. This year, the auction raised $55,000, part of which will go to the Three Rivers Carousel Foundation, which is restoring wooden horses and building an old-fashioned carousel for the community.
“The Bechtel Women’s Group provides an avenue to help new and old friends alike adjust to new surroundings,” says President Melinda Minor. “More importantly, it gives us an opportunity to give back to our community.”
