General Manager, Downstream & Chemicals
Joe Thompson is general manager of Bechtel’s Downstream and Chemicals business line in the company’s Oil, Gas and Chemicals business unit. He was elected a senior vice president in 2014.
Joe has extensive experience in megaproject development and execution, deep knowledge of the refining, gas processing and chemicals markets, and proven track record of engaging teams and stakeholders in successful project delivery.
Throughout his 35-year career with Bechtel, Joe served in a variety of project controls, engineering, construction, and project management roles holding key management positions on projects in the USA, Malaysia, China, and the Middle East. In 2007, Joe was named president of Bantrel, a Bechtel affiliate in Canada. He later assumed program management responsibility for the Motiva Crude Expansion project in Texas, successfully completing the construction and commissioning phases.
Joe became general manager of Bechtel’s Petrochemicals business line in 2012, successfully reinventing Bechtel’s position in the market. He was crucial to Bechtel securing engineering, procurement and construction contract with Shell for a new ethane cracker complex in Pennsylvania, subsequently leading the project to full notice to proceed and site mobilization.
Joe has a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University, New York, and is a registered professional engineer in Texas.
