1999-2009: Building a New Century

2000

Bechtel becomes the first engineering and construction company to embrace Six Sigma, a data-driven methodology for improving quality. 

2000

Bechtel begins a nationwide network expansion for a major US wireless carrier.

2000

Bechtel works on three Turkish Power Plants in western Turkey. 

2002

Bechtel started the Ground-based Midcourse Defense Program, in Alaska: an infrastructure that earned the customer’s highest performance award.

2002

Bechtel restarts a nuclear generator dormant for 22 years, in Browns Ferry, Alabama.

2002

Bechtel starts the West Coast Route Modernisation in the United Kingdom, a high-speed rail upgrade connecting London to Scotland.

2002

A Bechtel joint venture starts the longest U.S. suspension bridge in four decades, the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge near Seattle, Washington. 

2003

Bechtel takes on its largest Sino-foreign joint venture to date: CSPC Nanhai Petrochemicals Complex, China.

2003

Bechtel begins Darwin LNG, northern Australia a liquefied natural gas project.

2003

In the wake of conflict in Iraq, Bechtel helps rebuild vital infrastructure in that country, including roads, bridges, telecommunications, and power and water systems.

2005hurricane katrina

Working for the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, Bechtel provides temporary housing for nearly 100,000 Mississippi residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

2004

Bechtel begins construction on Hamad International Airport (formerly New Doha International Airport) in Qatar.

2004

Vodaphone, Australia chooses Bechtel for its 3G mobile service rollout.

2004

Bechtel starts its first project in Iceland, the big Fjarðaál Aluminum Smelter. The project wins Iceland’s highest award for environmental achievement.

2005

Bechtel begins work at the Oak Creek Power Plant, Wisconsin: a coal-fired facility.

Bechtel begins Sohar Aluminium, a greenfield smelter project in Oman. We employed 1,900 Omani's at the peak of construction.

Bechtel begins work on the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Extension in Northern Virginia, a 12-mile (19-kilometer) extension of Washington, D.C.'s metro system.

Bechtel begins work on Crossrail, London: The twin 13-mile (21-kilometer) rail tunnels and related systems make Crossrail the largest infrastructure project in Europe.

2010+: Long-Term Economic and Environmental Sustainability

Bechtel begins the pioneering Gabon Infrastructure build.

Bechtel forms an alliance with Babcock & Wilcox to commercialize Generation mPower, a small modular reactor development for nuclear power.

Bechtel begins work on three world-scale liquefied natural gas plants on Curtis Island in Queensland, Australia.

Bechtel begins work on Ivanpah Solar electric Generating System in California. 

2011

Muscat International Airport, Oman: 28-gate passenger terminal.

Bechtel is selected by BHP Billiton for two new copper projects high in the Chilean Andes.

2013

Bechtel is awarded the largest engineering, procurement, and construction project in its history: Riyadh Metro Lines 1 & 2, Saudi Arabia.

2012

Bechtel celebrates a half-century working in the UAE and 60 years in the UK.

2013

In Chile, work begins on a complex water system for Escondida, a desert copper mine.

Bill Dudley becomes CEO, Brendan Bechtel becomes president and COO.

2014 

Broke ground on Riyadh Metro, the largest fixed-price contract in Bechtel history.
