Living Our Commitment

Bechtel respects human rights everywhere we operate. Our actions are consistent with applicable national laws; Bechtel’s Vision, Values & Covenants; and the spirit and intent of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This commitment is set forth in the Bechtel Code of Conduct.

Our focus areas

Human rights issues in our business can be expansive and complex. At Bechtel, we focus our management on four areas: 

  1. Workers: Treat colleagues in a manner consistent with Bechtel’s Vision, Values & Covenants.
  2. Security: Provide security consistent with international principles when protecting people and assets.
  3. Communities: Engage communities on potential project risks and impacts.
  4. Suppliers: Engage core suppliers to promote responsible business.

We also collaborate with global human rights organizations, customers, partners, and peers to exchange knowledge and practical experiences to inform our business practices. Bechtel is a founding member of the Building Responsibly initiative, a global coalition dedicated to advancing efforts of construction and engineering firms to more effectively align with international human rights frameworks, promote a healthier environment for workers, and further improve project delivery and quality for customers. Bechtel is joined by Amec Foster Wheeler, CH2M, Fluor, Multiplex, and Vinci, as well as global non-profits Humanity United and Business for Social Responsibility (BSR). 

Through our 2030 sustainability target to engage 100 percent of our key suppliers to promote sustainability in the delivery of materials and services and prevent modern-day slavery, we are committed to driving responsible business practices within our supply chain.

Modern Day Slavery

The world is bolstering efforts to eliminate the scourge of slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labor and human trafficking, including in global supply chains and on construction sites. We have integrated these issues comprehensively in our corporate policy and business processes. We have also made the prevention, detection, and reporting of human rights violations in any part of Bechtel’s business or supply chain the responsibility of all employees.
Under the UK Modern Slavery Act (MSA), Bechtel’s annual MSA statement describes our efforts to ensure that slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labor and human trafficking have not occurred in our business operations and supply chains.
