In my current assignment, I prepare civil designs and drawings for the Extended Power Uprate project at Turkey Point Nuclear Plant in Florida. After “walkdowns” at the plant to verify information about existing equipment and installations, I’m responsible for preparing drawings for the update using AutoCAD.
I enjoy the walkdowns. There are massive machines and components, and, strange as it may sound, I like the noise they make in unison. Every time I go on a walkdown, I see new areas and hear new sounds of the plant. It also helps me see my job as a designer from a different perspective.
I welcome any and all challenges, such as completing nuclear training courses—especially radiological worker training. That’s one of the classes required for clearance to enter the containment area and other sensitive parts of the plant. It’s helping to make me more knowledgeable about nuclear plants.
