Bachelor’s in Architectural Engineering, University of Texas at Austin; Civil/Structural/Architectural Engineer

Melissa S.

I heard about Bechtel through Inroads, a nonprofit organization that develops and places minority youth in business and industry by partnering with companies like Bechtel. I completed three internships with Bechtel before becoming a full-time employee upon graduation.

So far, I have worked on three very different projects while being based at Bechtel’s Houston office. I started on the Shell Scotford Upgrader Expansion 1 project, which is in Alberta, Canada. Following that, I worked on the ConocoPhillips Wood River Refinery, located in Illinois. I’m currently on the Angola LNG project. My job is to check the gravity and seismic loads for a steel frame supporting two cranes, and I will be designing the frame’s access platform for wind and seismic conditions.

I am really enjoying the opportunity to work with and learn from Bechtel’s great engineers. In the next five years, I will strive to complete my master’s degree in civil engineering and become a professional licensed engineer. As my career progresses at Bechtel, I want to begin working on projects from the start and see how they progress through completion.
