My first assignment was on the Shell Scotford Upgrader Expansion 1 project in Alberta. Now, working out of the Houston office on the ConocoPhillips Wood River refinery expansion project in Illinois, my main responsibilities are to design support structures for the various operational components of a petrochemical facility. The task is made even more interesting by the sheer level of detail involved in the design and the constant interaction with other disciplines in order to fulfill their requirements.
Every day on the job, I learn something new that makes me better appreciate the size and complexity of Bechtel projects. Each one is like a large machine with many different components, and getting to know how each component interacts with the others and how they eventually come together is what I find most interesting about my job.
In the future, I would also like to spend some time as a field engineer and get to know the construction aspect of the business, which will give me better perspective on the engineering phase. My long-term goal is to lead a team in the execution of a project.
