Procurement isn’t just about buying materials. From the time a project begins until completion, it’s about getting the right things to the right place at the right time. As a compliance manager, I look at the people we deal with and the places where we do business.
People typically think of exports as tangible items such as materials and equipment used on projects, but exports can take other forms as well. Any item sent from the United States to an international destination is considered an export, and under U.S. regulations, that includes software and technology.
We’re expanding the suppliers we consider for many commodities and equipment, as well as the countries from which we source, such as China, India, and some in the Middle East. This in turn means additional regulatory requirements. It’s a daily challenge to develop procedures that take into account export regulations as well as our business needs.
