Bechtel collaborates with owners, engineers, suppliers, and stakeholders on a variety of water resource efforts for large-scale industrial complexes. We are driven and determined to deliver difficult and complex projects on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with quality and environmental requirements.
Jubail Industrial City Cooling Water Management System, Saudi Arabia
As a part of our work for the Royal Commission of Jubail and Yanbu, Bechtel developed plans for a massive seawater cooling system, a desalinated potable water system, and a wastewater treatment and disposal system for the entire industrial city. The seawater cooling system plan includes a massive intake and pumping plant, large canals, and off-takes that feed individual industries. In addition, Bechtel planned and managed the construction of the potable water supply and wastewater treatment and disposal systems for both the industrial plants and the city of Jubail.
Cowlitz Falls Hydroelectric Project, United States
The Cowlitz Falls project was a technically challenging project because of the narrow canyon in which the project was constructed. The large flood flow and geology created the need to utilize most of the river width by using an integrated design with a unique spillway/powerhouse structure. The Public Utility District No. 1 of Lewis County, Washington, awarded the project to Bechtel. The project
included a concrete gravity dam and integral powerhouse with a gated spillway over the top. Bechtel provided project management, construction management, design engineering, and procurement services, as well as administrative and other support services. After the success of the project, Bechtel was awarded the operation and maintenance of the plant.
Cardiff Bay Barrage, United Kingdom
Bechtel helped to manage one of the largest urban renewal programs in the United Kingdom: a waterfront development at Cardiff Bay. The project’s centerpiece was an earthen barrage, spillway, and navigation lock system that converted the tidal flats into an attractive freshwater lake. The water management system provided planning opportunities for commercial and residential development. Bechtel provided program management services for design, procurement, and construction of the barrage facilities, as well as associated engineering studies.
