Bechtel has been involved in more than 80 marine projects around the world, more than 25 of them in the last 10 years. These projects include the development of the Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi and the King Fahd Industrial Port in Saudi Arabia.
Doha Ports, Qatar
Building on a relationship developed on the New Doha International Airport, Qatar asked Bechtel to develop several port and marina master plans. Most recently, Bechtel prepared a master plan for a new offshore container port that will replace a constrained port facility at the center of Doha Bay. The program includes tripling the size of the existing port and linking it to the mainland with a new 8-kilometer (4.9 mile), four-lane bridge, as well as plans for a redevelopment concept for the existing port and a 500-hectare (1,235 acres) free-trade zone.
Daxie Island, China
Bechtel, together with China’s CITIC Group, developed the master plan for a container port and industrial project 140-kilometers (86 miles) south of Shanghai. Daxie Island includes 20 square kilometers (4,942 acres) of industrial development on an offshore island linked to the mainland by a multi-lane bridge. The project is largely complete, with a highly successful mix of heavy industrial and petrochemical tenants.
King Fahd Industrial Port, Saudi Arabia
As a part of Bechtel’s role in developing the industrial city of Jubail, the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu asked Bechtel to develop master plans for both an industrial and a commercial port. The industrial facilities include a 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) causeway with 20 berths and the commercial facilities include an 18-berth commercial port designed primarily for containerized and break bulk cargo handling. The project also includes an extensive bulk and liquid material handling system, a tank storage farm, and ship loading facilities.
Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone, United Arab Emirates
With a vision to create a first class port and industrial zone, Abu Dhabi Ports Company presented Bechtel with the task to manage and coordinate the master planning, design, and construction of
the Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone and its associated infrastructure. Planning services include phasing and control of the master development program for more than 50 square kilometers
(12,355 acres) of industrial zones.
Umm Qasr Port, Iraq
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracted with Bechtel to lead the port assessment team in its mission to evaluate damage sustained to and develop consolidated upgrade plans for Iraq’s primary port at Umm Qasr. The findings of the assessment were used by the U.S. Agency for International Development to establish funding for the engineering and construction at the port, which was subsequently performed by Bechtel.
Batam Container Port Project, Indonesia
American President Lines (APL) came to Bechtel to help develop a container port concept. Bechtel prepared a pre-feasibility study establishing the master plan and cost of this project to help APL realize the viability of its vision. The project is located at Batam Island due to its excellent accessibility to the main east-west shipping lanes just south of Singapore.
