Ideas that Connect

Rail

With a century of rail and transit experience—and more than 12,000-kilometers (7,456 miles) of track designed and built—Bechtel maintains a cadre of the industry’s best planners, engineers, and builders who work alongside customers to ensure their needs are met. With Bechtel working for you, the concept of making your connection anytime to anywhere can become a reality.

Korea High Speed Rail, Korea
Working closely with the Korea High Speed Rail Construction Authority as part of an integrated project management organization, Bechtel provided project management services for nearly all phases of the 412-kilometer (256 miles) highspeed rail line project to connect Seoul and Pusan. Bechtel’s responsibilities covered design management, railway operations, quality control, safety; and cost and schedule management, including carefully monitoring more than 4,400 separate activities on the integrated project schedule.

High Speed 1, London, United Kingdom
High Speed 1 (formerly the Channel Tunnel Rail Link) is the first high-speed rail project in the UK and Britain’s first new railway in a century. Its 109-kilometers (68 miles) of track connect London with the Channel Tunnel, enabling Eurostar trains to whisk passengers between London and Paris (or Brussels) in just two hours and 15 minutes at speeds of up to 300-kilometers (186 miles) per hour.
Bechtel led a consortium responsible for design, project management, and construction management of High Speed 1, which began in the 1990s and was completed on time and within budget. The new line crosses over the River Medway, tunnels under the River Thames, and threads above and below ground through London, before terminating at St. Pancras, now Europe’s largest passenger interchange. During the early development of the route, Bechtel project management and senior construction experts gave strategic advice, drawing on recent experience of the construction of the Channel Tunnel, for the planned route and subsequent implementation.

Crossrail, London, United Kingdom
London’s Crossrail project is of such scale and magnitude that it’s divided into two multibillion-dollar programs—each among Europe’s largest. Bechtel leads both. As the development manager, we facilitate and manage the scoping studies, cost estimating, preliminary design, and subcontractors to produce reference designs for the entire project. When complete, Crossrail will link existing ommuter railways that terminate east and west of London with a tunnel under central London.
