Bridging Gaps with New Ideas

Bridges & Highways

Whether it is an urban highway, bridge, or tunnel project, or a small stretch of access road in a new industrial zone, every piece of every project benefits from our transportation professionals’ expertise. Bechtel has some of the best planners, engineers, and builders who ensure that our customers’ interests are served throughout the process.

Kosovo Motorway, Kosovo
Government officials of Kosovo turned to a Bechtel joint venture to connect its country to Albania and the Adriatic. The plan included an alternative alignment for the Morinë-Merdare Motorway. The new alignment eliminated nearly 5-kilometers (3.10 miles) of costly tunnels and saved the government hundreds of millions of euros. Our team was responsible for design management, procurement, and construction for the new four-lane motorway.

Albanian Motorway, Albania
A Bechtel joint venture took on the challenge of creating the Albanian Motorway, which includes a 5.5-kilometer (3.4 mile) twin bore tunnel and 29 bridges built in a rocky, mountainous region. In addition to managing the design and construction of the motorway Bechtel worked with the Ministry of Transportation and the local jurisdictional authorities to develop a suitable and sustainable
process for expropriating the land, as well as a plan to reduce the carbon footprint. All of this was accomplished under an expedited schedule.

New Tacoma Narrows Bridge, United States
As part of a public-private partnership, the Washington State Department of Transportation awarded the Bechtel led team a contract to develop the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Through a development agreement with the state, Bechtel worked with local communities and stakeholders, and then planned, developed, designed, and managed the environmental review process. Completion of the project was subsequently through a design-build contract, and in July 2007, on schedule and on budget, our team completed the longest suspension span built in the United States in 40 years.
