Ivanpah Solar Project Receives Key Support

August 5, 2010

A California Energy Commission siting committee has issued a proposed decision recommending approval of BrightSource Energy’s Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System. Bechtel is partnering with BrightSource to build Ivanpah in the Mojave Desert, which will be the world’s largest solar thermal facility.

The committee’s proposed decision marks the beginning of a 30-day public comment period, after which the Ivanpah project will be put before the full California Energy Commission for a final decision.  The project is also being reviewed by the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM is expected to issue its Final Environmental Impact Statement for Ivanpah in the near future, followed by a final Record of Decision.  BrightSource expects to have all of the necessary permits to commence construction in late 2010.

When constructed, Ivanpah will generate enough electricity to power 140,000 homes.
