Crossrail Construction Begins

May 15, 2009

A ceremony was held in London today to mark the beginning of work on the £16 billion (US$24 billion) Crossrail project. Watch the BBC News clip for the ceremony and more about the project.

On April 1, the Bechtel, Halcrow, and Systra team was selected as project delivery partner for the project’s central tunnel section that entails construction of 21 km of twin-bore tunnels from Paddington to Canary Wharf. On April 24, Bechtel was selected as the delivery partner for Network Rail and its Crossrail program on the existing rail network. The work includes network upgrades to integrate with Crossrail, and managing a complex rail upgrade at Reading station.
