Retired Bechtel Chairman Supports Engineering Causes

February 23, 2008

Steve Bechtel, Jr., the company’s retired chairman, made $3 million in charitable gifts to engineering education programs at two U.S. universities.

The first gift provides $2 million for the new School of Engineering Education at Purdue University, where Mr. Bechtel received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. The funds will help underwrite construction of the Ideas to Innovation Learning Laboratory, which will serve 1,600 students annually in Purdue’s first-year engineering program.

The second donation of $1 million went to the California Institute of Technology, where Mr. Bechtel serves as a Life Trustee. The gift will help fund construction of the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology.
