August 01, 2002
- Bechtel will participate in a five-year project to eliminate solid- and liquid-fueled rockets, bombers, submarines, and weapons-of-mass-destruction infrastructure and production facilities, including chemical and biological capabilities, in the former Soviet Union. The company recently completed an eight-year project to dismantle numerous SS-24 missile launch facilities in Ukraine.
- Seven firefighters at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory were recognized by the Argonne National Laboratory-West for their timely response and rescue at an auto accident last December involving an Argonne employee. The firefighters removed the victim from the vehicle, provided medical assistance, and transported him to a nearby hospital. The victim is expected to fully recover.
- Work has begun on the $750 million Comalco Alumina Refinery at Gladstone, Queensland, where Bechtel is providing engineering, procurement, and construction services. Bechtel’s contract covers refinery processing and production facilities; a steam generation plant; a bauxite residue storage area; a port facility; and materials handling, transportation, and associated stockpile areas. First product is scheduled to ship from the 1.4-million-tonne-capacity refinery in early 2005.
- A statue near the Golden Gate Bridge was dedicated April 14 in honor of the men and women of the U. S. sea services who departed San Francisco on tours of duty. The memorial includes a two-meter-tall bronze statue, four bronze reliefs depicting each of the sea services, and a plaque dedicating the memorial to the thousands who “have sailed past this place, in peace and war, to defend this country and its sea frontiers.” A Bechtel-related foundation grant supported construction of the monument, while Bechtel contributed its fee for project management.
- Queen Elizabeth II has named Cliff Mumm, president of Bechtel Construction Operations, a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). The honor, rarely awarded to a non-U.K. citizen, recognizes Mumm’s service as chief project executive on London’s Jubilee Line Extension. Bechtel completed the project in late 1999, in time to carry revelers to London’s millennium celebration. The CBE is the third in a progression of four high national honors leading up to knighthood that the Queen can award: Member, Order, Commander, and Knight of the British Empire.
- Bechtel has been awarded a program management contract for Cingular Wireless’s upgrade and expansion to a gsm/gprs network. GSM is the world’s most widely deployed wireless technology. GPRS is the next step in Cingular’s migration to “third-generation” voice and data technology, and will provide customers with faster, always-on wireless services such as e-mail, instant messaging, and Internet browsing. Bechtel’s role will include logistics, procurement, construction management, and materials management for the 16,000-site project in top U.S. markets.
- Daniel Chao, executive vice president and managing director of Bechtel Enterprises Holdings, Inc., has been appointed a member of the Advisory Committee for the Export-Import Bank of the United States for 2002. Committee members represent sectors of the U.S. economy and counsel the bank on its programs and its competitiveness with other export credit agencies.

The project includes development of an open-pit mine and construction of related facilities. The customer is Goro Nickel S.A., a subsidiary of Inco Ltd. Canada. Completion is scheduled for late 2004.
- Bechtel and its operating unit Becon have begun work on the Magnolia Energy project, a 900-megawatt natural gas-fired power facility in Ashland, Mississippi, for a subsidiary of InterGen. It is one of three plants Bechtel is designing and Becon is constructing for InterGen using a standardized plant design. The project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2003.
