Milestones Q1 2002

April 01, 2002
  • InterGen announced the financial close and funding of credit facilities for the La Rosita Energy, a 1065-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired, combined cycle power facility located near the city of Mexicali, in the state of Baja California. With an estimated cost of approximately $748 million, the La Rosita project will be InterGen's third natural gas-fired electricity generating facility in Mexico.
  • Bechtel announced 2001 results. The company booked $9.3 billion in new work last year. Workoff revenue of $13.4 represented one of the highest levels in Bechtel's history.
  • Bechtel has destroyed the last SS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile silo in Ukraine. Under two separate contracts with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the company demolished 175 missile silos and 18 launch control centers, converting the military sites to their original contour. To mark the end of the program, which began eight years ago, three 8-year old Ukranians participated in the destruction of the last silo.
  • Bechtel will add two 400-megawatt coal-fired generating units to Tucson Electric Power's existing Springerville Generating Station, which Bechtel designed in 1978. Construction is scheduled to begin this quarter on the project for the owners - UniSource Energy Development Corporation (a subsidiary of UniSource Energy Corporation, parent company of Tucson Electric Power), and the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District.
  • A Bechtel joint venture with Turkish partner Enka is moving forward with the construction of offshore islands in the north Caspian Sea for a consortium of nine international oil-drilling companies. The 18,000-square-meter islands are being constructed in the recently discovered Kashagan oil field. Each will have areas for drilling, housing, and a helicopter pad. Despite late notice to start construction, the first island, called Kashagan East, was completed just as the sea froze in November, blocking further construction for the season.
  • Dr. Chang Oh, a consulting engineer at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in recognition of his contributions to thermal and fluid science research.
  • Bechtel has completed the $1.2 billion Antamina copper project under budget and more than two months ahead of schedule. The project, on the remote eastern slope of the Andes, included the world’s largest grassroots, single-line copper, zinc, and molybdenum concentrator; the world’s largest concrete-faced rockfill tailings dam; a cross-country slurry pipeline; new mountain roads; a port with a filter plant and marine terminal; and other facilities. Bechtel began the project for a customer consortium in 1998.
  • Bechtel has begun work on the Redbud Energy Project, a 1,200-megawatt natural gas-fired, combined cycle power facility for a subsidiary of InterGen North America, near Oklahoma City. It is the third in a series of plants Bechtel is constructing for InterGen by using standardized designs. The project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2003.
  • Bechtel is performing front-end engineering and design, execution planning, estimating, and scheduling for a 3.6-million-tonne-per-year liquefied natural gas train for British Gas, Edison International, and Egyptian General Petroleum Corp. The project, which will be constructed in Idku, Egypt, is based on the highly successful Atlantic LNG project in Trinidad and Tobago, where Bechtel has worked for British Gas since 1996.
  • Alliance Bechtel Linde has completed, on schedule, the engineering, procurement, construction, and startup of an ethylene production plant and an export facility at the Borouge Petrochemicals Complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi. The alliance has been at the site, owned by Abu Dhabi Polymers Co. Ltd., since 1999.
  • A new company formed by Bechtel Enterprises affiliate International Water Holdings and an Ecuadoran partner, Equidor, S.A., has assumed management of the water, wastewater, and drainage systems in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, with a population of nearly 2.5 million. Under the 30-year concession, the new company, Interagua, will operate, maintain, and expand connections for the city’s potable water and sanitary sewage systems.
