  • The National Association of Builders and Contractors has awarded Becon, a Bechtel operating unit, its 2000 Award of Merit for work at Chevron Chemical´s normal alpha olefins complex at Cedar Bayou, Texas. Becon completed work last year on the project, which involves adding a new 340-million-kilogram-per-year unit to an existing plant. The facility is the second major unit of its type that Becon has built at Chevron´s Texas Gulf Coast plant.
  • Bechtel has added two new projects to its portfolio of high-tech industrial work in China. In Shanghai, the company is providing construction management and procurement services to IBM for a $300 million microelectronics assembly and test facility. In Beijing, Bechtel is project manager for GE Medical Systems China, Ltd., overseeing construction of a $30 million manufacturing facility for medical imaging systems.
  • Bechtel has broken ground on the Cottonwood Energy Project, a 1,200-megawatt, natural gas-fired power facility near Deweyville, Texas. The facility is owned by InterGen, the Shell-Bechtel Enterprises global power generation joint venture, and is InterGen´s first major project to close financing in the United States. Bechtel has a turnkey contract to build the facility, which will begin commercial operation by mid-2003.
  • One of the world’s largest zinc mines, the Pasminco Century project, has been named a winner of the Australian Engineering Excellence Award for 2000. The multi-site project faced technical challenges, remote locations, and heavy rains, yet it provided numerous community benefits such as employment, training, and infrastructure upgrades. Bechtel was project manager on the mine, which was completed $52 million under budget.
