Milestones Q3 2000
December 01, 2000
- Bechtel Enterprises assisted with the September launch of an infrastructure-oriented global business Internet portal. InfrastructureWorld provides users access to investors, contractors, and other providers of infrastructure-related services worldwide. The company expects government and commercial sponsors, international banks, insurance firms, developers, and equipment suppliers to use the site. Users can also take advantage of project management and other on-line tools to facilitate faster and more cost-effective development and construction.
- Bechtel will perform front-end engineering design for a liquefied natural gas plant under an agreement with Pertamina, Indonesia's national oil company, and ARCO. The Tangguh LNG facility will process natural gas from three remote fields, which together comprise one of the largest gas deposits in the Asia Pacific region. The design will employ the Phillips Optimized Cascade™ process. Bechtel formed an alliance with Phillips in 1996 to market this proprietary technology, which uses propane, ethylene, and methane to cool and compress natural gas into a liquid state for shipping.
- Bechtel is performing engineering and construction management for broadband services provider FiberNet, installing fiber-optic cable in about 75 high-rise, high-density office buildings in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston. Engineering is under way or nearly complete in most of the buildings, with installation ongoing in New York and Chicago. FiberNet may add buildings in other cities to expand the open-ended contract.
- The Bechtel-led consortium assisting Ukrainian utility Energoatom at the damaged Chornobyl nuclear plant achieved four significant milestones this year. In May, project staff identified short-term stabilization goals and access requirements to enclose Chornobyl's radioactive core. By year-end, the team also will have defined an approach to stabilizing the shelter's roof, developed a strategy for dealing with fuel-containing material, and selected a conceptual design for a new confinement structure.
- A new Bechtel Enterprises affiliate has been formed to help governments worldwide develop, operate, and manage privatized airport infrastructure projects. Alterra Partners offers equity investment, financing, development, and operations expertise to improve airport operations and revenues. Alterra is based in London, with offices in San Francisco, Singapore, and
Mexico City.
- The American Society of Civil Engineers has awarded Bechtel's James van Hoften its Presidents' Award for distinguished service for 2000. Van Hoften joined Bechtel in 1986 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, where, in 1984, he became the first civil engineer to fly on the space shuttle. He is currently leading Bechtel's project team on the New Scottish Air Traffic Control Centre in Prestwick, Scotland.
- Bechtel Enterprises affiliate International Water Ltd., as part of a consortium called Catchment, has been named as preferred bidder for a 30-year build, own, and operate wastewater project on Scotland's northeast Moray Coast. A Bechtel-led joint venture that has built two other projects for the customer, North of Scotland Water Authority, is performing detailed design under an advance contract.
- Stephen Bechtel Jr. has received the Distinguished Constructor Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. The award is presented annually to those considered "the most influential and innovative leaders of our time." The society called Bechtel a "master builder and developer of advanced management techniques for world-class industrial projects."
- The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has awarded a four-year contract to a joint venture led by Bechtel Infrastructure to help manage repairs and seismic upgrades to the city's Hetch Hetchy water and wastewater system. The system stretches about 240 kilometers from Yosemite National Park to the Bay Area and serves 2.4 million customers nearly a billion liters of water per day. The project is expected to cost about $3 billion and take 10 years to complete.
- The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory is the first U.S. Department of Energy site to have all of its facilities and programs pass inspection by an independent team of safety management experts. The milestone was achieved after a three-year effort to improve safe work practices. Bechtel BWXT Idaho manages the laboratory.
- September 24 marked the 100th anniversary of Stephen D. Bechtel Sr.'s birthday. As the son of Bechtel founder Warren A. Bechtel, Steve Sr. spent much of his childhood on construction projects. In 1925, he was named vice president of the company, then president in 1933, upon his father's death. He would head the company until 1960. Stephen Bechtel Sr.'s accomplishments have been recognized worldwide. He was named one of Time magazine's 20 most influential "Builders and Titans" of the 20th century. Steve Sr. died in 1989.

Over the past 20 years, Bechtel has been involved at the Oak Ridge facility in many roles.
- One of Bechtel's long-standing project safety records was shattered this year. Workers at the Onshore Gas Development Phase 2--a gas-processing facility where Bechtel has worked since 1998--topped 27 million consecutive job hours without a lost-time accident. The company's previous record of nearly 18 million safe hours was achieved at the Onshore Gas Development Phase 1 project, at the same site. The customer is Abu Dhabi Gas Company. The project is a joint venture of Technip and Bechtel.
- For the third time in three years, Bechtel has been recognized for project execution excellence in Queensland, Australia. The Australian Institution of Engineers has presented its 2000 Engineering Excellence Award to Bechtel for its project management at the Pasminco Century mine and ore processing facilities. The award singles out projects for achievements in environmental sustainability.
