Every dog has its day

Rebuilding an animal shelter in Trinidad

Volunteers from Bechtel’s Petrotrin Gas Optimization Project joined with local contractors last year to reconstruct an animal shelter in Oropouche, Trinidad.

Raj Bhajan, civil superintendent, Gillian Gonzales, administration assistant, and Project Manager Joe Peckis and his wife, Eileen, worked with local contractors to complete the 4-acre (1.6-hectare) rebuild in just eight weeks, in time for a major dog and cat adoption drive by Animals Alive. The nonprofit organization rescues abandoned and abused pets, and operates the shelter.

Joe Peckis became involved in the project after he met Animals Alive’s vice president at a barbershop. “There’s a major problem with dogs running loose in Trinidad,” Peckis says. “When I heard about the adoption efforts and the need to reconstruct the shelter, I knew there was a way we could help.”

Animals Alive has found homes for 230 dogs and 40 cats since it was founded three years ago. Animals that are not adopted can stay at the sanctuary for the rest of their natural lives.
