The true meaning of can-do

Turning food into art for charity

What do you get when you mix engineers and canned goods? Canstruction, an annual charitable event at Bechtel’s Frederick campus.

In late March, teams representing projects and functions used their ingenuity and design skills to turn thousands of cans of donated food into objets d’art — or at least something cool. Later, the 3,500 food items, along with approximately $6,000 donated by people who came to watch, plus the $200 prize for the best project, all went to the Frederick Rescue Mission, a local nonprofit
organization.

This year, six teams had one hour to complete their masterpieces. Chief engineers of the functions then judged their efforts, awarding first place to a team from the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System roject for its playable miniature golf course.

Other impressive “canstructions” included a yellow bulldozer by Project Controls, a giant Etch A Sketch by the Nuclear Operating Plant Services group, and a model of a nuclear power plant by a team representing a Florida power uprate project. They even built a “canned” replica of the project’s alligator mascot.
